STRATEGIC GRANTMAKING
Using proceeds from Fight Night, Fight For Children supports other local
non-profit organizations that provide education and healthcare services
and demonstrate measurable positive results in improving the lives of
children in DC. Fight For Children has invested in over 150 local
organizations since 1990, including the following organizations that

EXPANDING ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION
Archdiocese of Washington ($50,000)
The Archdiocese of Washington works to keep Catholic education as
affordable as possible. Fight For Children is pleased to support the
Archdiocesan Tuition Assistance Program, available to students
applying to or currently enrolled in Catholic schools within the
Archdiocese. Over 97 percent of students that graduate from Catholic
high schools go on to attend college.

Capital Partners for Education (CPE) ($20,000)
CPE is the only youth serving organization in the metropolitan area
that provides students with a combination of private high school
scholarships, adult mentors, academic support, and enrichment
opportunities. The majority of CPE students live in the District of
Columbia; 96 percent are students of color and 80 percent come from
single-parent families. Fight For Children’s grant will provide general
operating support.

District of Columbia College Access Program (DC-CAP) ($75,000)
The District of Columbia College Access Program (DC-CAP) encourages and
enables DC public high school students to enter and graduate from
college. Fight For Children is proud to support DC-CAP’s recent
expansion to students within the DC charter school system in an effort
to increase the number of kids getting the resources they need to make
college a reality.

DC College Success Foundation (DC CSF) ($10,000)
DC College Success Foundation (DC CSF) is a non-profit organization
created in 2006 to expand the pipeline of low-income and
underrepresented students who complete a baccalaureate degree. DC CSF
administers numerous programs to benefit DC students, including the
Costco DC Scholarship Fund, which. Fight For Children is supporting with
this grant.

Latino Student Fund (LSF) ($25,000)
The LSF was founded by concerned parents, community leaders, and
educators who recognized the need to combat the growing high school
dropout rates within the Hispanic community by providing better access
to educational opportunities. Only 16 percent of Hispanic high school
graduates continue on to earn college degrees. The LSF Scholars Program,
which is supported by this grant, addresses this issue by providing
supplemental academic support to at-risk and underprivileged Latino
youth with an emphasis on promoting higher education and professional
development.

The Shepherd Foundation ($25,000)
The Shepherd Foundation assists families attending Catholic grade
schools and high schools who may need temporary or long-term tuition
assistance. The foundation works closely with the local elementary and
high schools of the Washington Archdiocese to identify deserving
students, Catholic or non-Catholic, in need of financial help. The
Shepherd Foundation has no overhead expenses, and 100% of Fight For
Children’s grant will be used for scholarships.

Washington Scholarship Fund (WSF) ($100,000)
WSF expands and improves educational options in Washington, DC, by
enabling low-income District families to have a choice in where they
send their children to elementary, middle, and high school. Fight For
Children is pleased to invest in WSF’s Signature Scholarship Program
benefiting low-income students in the District of Columbia.

IMPROVING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Alexandria Boxing Club ($55,000)
The Alexandria Boxing Club is a structured after-school program for
kids focusing on development, self-respect and assurance to support
their “fight” for a better way of life. Fight For Children is proud
to continue supporting this worthy organization making a positive
impact on children’s academic achievement while encouraging physical
activity and discipline.
Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) ($20,000)
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area is dedicated to
making a positive difference in the lives of children through
professionally supported long-term, One-To-OneŽ mentoring relationships
with carefully screened, caring and committed adults. Specifically, this
grant supports BBBS’ Mentoring Children of Prisoners initiative created
to help children with incarcerated parents learn the way to a positive
future and productive adulthood.

Communities in Schools (CISNCAP) ($5,000)
CISNCAP champions the connection of needed community resources with
underserved schools in the District of Columbia to help students
successfully learn, remain in school, and prepare for life. CISNCAP
works directly with the most disenfranchised student populations in
Washington, DC, identifying and removing barriers to their success in
school and life. Fight For Children’s grant will provide general
operating support.

DC Scores ($20,000)
With teamwork as the unifying value, DC SCORES inspires youth to lead
healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in
their communities. Fight For Children supports DC SCORES’ elementary
after-school program that utilizes creative writing and expression,
soccer, and service learning as tools to promote student achievement and
improved health outcomes.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts ($50,000)
The Kennedy Center presents the greatest performers and performances
from across America and around the world, nurturing new works and young
artists, and serving the nation as a leader in arts education. This
contribution supports the Kennedy Center’s Community Partnerships
Program, a collection of programs that integrates arts education into
culturally diverse communities in the Washington, DC public school
system.

KEEPING KIDS HEALTHY SO THEY CAN LEARN
Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) ($25,000)
Children’s National Medical Center is the only exclusive provider of
pediatric care in the metropolitan Washington area. CNMC has been
serving the nation’s children for more than 130 years. This grant,
the 2008 Fight Night Chairman’s Choice, supports CNMC’s Nephrology
Division.

Georgetown University’s KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic (KMMC) ($50,000)
KMMC improves access for underserved children to comprehensive services
necessary to achieve better healthcare and improved quality of life.
This grant will support KMMC’s expanded efforts in programming for
mental health and social services, education, and advocacy to ensure
that children receive the comprehensive care they need.

Mary’s Center ($20,000)
Mary’s Center serves a multicultural population of individuals and
families with limited or no access to health-related services residing
in every Ward in Washington, DC. The Center embraces culturally diverse
communities to provide them with the highest quality of care, regardless
of their ability to pay. Fight For Children’s grant will provide general
operating support.

OTHER
Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation ($65,000)
Proceeds from the Fight Night US flag auction go to this foundation
that provides scholarships for higher education to the children of
Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who have made the
ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.
